The Eagle That Watches

In August, Liz shared one of her favourite moments from our time in Victoria, BC—seeing the whales. My favourite moment was a little different. It was seeing a bald eagle perched high in a tree.

I watched it sit there, high above the ground. It seemed completely at home, quietly watching everything around it. Eagles are known for their remarkable eyesight, allowing them to see great distances from their high vantage point. From that tree, it had a view of the territory below that we could never experience from where we stood.

Psalm 121:5–8 says:

“The Lord watches over you—

the Lord is your shade at your right hand;

the sun will not harm you by day,

nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm—

he will watch over your life;

the Lord will watch over your coming and going

both now and forevermore.”

The reminder here is that the Lord watches over all of us.

There are moments when we may wonder if anyone sees what we are going through. We may feel unnoticed, uncertain about what is happening around us, or unable to see what lies ahead. But Scripture reminds us that God is not distant or distracted. He watches over our lives.

He watches over our coming and going. He sees what we cannot see. He knows what is happening around us, even when we don’t understand it ourselves. That bald eagle was simply sitting high in the tree, keeping watch. And for me, it was a powerful and beautiful reminder that God continues to watch over us.

God speaks to us through the most unexpected moments.

Sometimes it’s a whale in the ocean.

Sometimes it’s an eagle in a tree.

And sometimes it’s simply the quiet reminder:

You are being watched over by God.
