REMEMBERING BOB BRUCE It is with sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Bob Bruce on September 8, following a short battle with pneumonia. Adventist Education for Corene (Glover) and Nolan brought Bob and Vicki to the hilltop in 1986, and they were both an active part of the CHSDA Church family for many years. A memorial service for Bob will be held at a later date.
JOB OPPORTUNITY The Red Deer Soup Kitchen is seeking a new Director. The Director will be responsible for all aspects of meal service, including acquiring and managing supplies, meal preparation, volunteer coordination, and community liaison. The successful candidate should be comfortable handling heavy pots and climbing multiple flights of stairs. This is a part-time, paid position with benefits. IN AWE
Recently, I went on the trip of a lifetime. My husband and I were celebrating our 40th anniversary and wanted to do something significant with our two boys and their wives. The six of us set off for Athens, boarded a cruise ship for 8 days, spent another three days in Athens, and then three days in Istanbul.
We got to see amazing things. The beauty of the white & blue buildings on Santorini was stunning. We visited other Greek islands, went to Ephesus in Türkiye, and Thessaloniki in Greece before returning to Athens. We visited the Acropolis of Athens and saw the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike. These were built 2,500 years ago. We went to the Areopagus where Paul preached a very famous message recorded in Acts 17:22–31. In Istanbul, we went underground to the Basilica Cistern, built 1,500 years ago. So impressive. We went to the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Fascinating. These are things I have dreamed about seeing.
I check in on myself regularly, and I was surprised that I was not experiencing the awe I expected I would. I am reminded of the difference between wonder and awe. “Wonder fuels our passion for exploration and learning, for curiosity and adventure.”¹ I certainly felt wonder at all these manmade places.
Awe has us feeling overwhelmed by the vastness of something that is almost incomprehensible. “Awe leads people to cooperate, share resources, and sacrifice for others and causes them to fully appreciate the value of others and see themselves more accurately, evoking humility.”²
As I stood on the balcony of the cruise ship and watched the sunrise, I felt awe. As I watched my precious family interact for two solid weeks—very different personalities, yet there were no arguments, just joy, love, gentleness, and respect toward each other, and much support and helpfulness—in this, I felt awe. My boys supporting me to get up and down hundreds of stairs, being constantly ready, willing, waiting, and wanting to support me. This leaves me speechless with awe, and happy, grateful tears.
The things of God, sunrises and sunsets, love, family, joy, and laughter—these take my breath away on a regular basis.
