AS WE SHARED THANKSGIVING DINNER with family and friends this past weekend, did we pause to express gratitude and ask each other, “What are you grateful for today?” Which people in my life am I grateful for, and have I told them why? What happened to me today that was good, and what am I taking for granted? What was the last book I read or movie I really appreciated, and why? What is something kind someone has said or done lately? Expressing gratitude or writing a thank-you note helps us dwell on something positive for a longer period. “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.” — Philippians 4:4 (KJV) ~ Your Health Ministry Team

Beyond the Scoreboard: Loved at Our Worst

Third place was not the finish we wanted, but coaching these players this weekend was still a gift. This was my second year coaching the PAA men’s soccer team at the Walla Walla Volleyball & Soccer Classic. Last year, we finished second. This year, despite real effort and preparation, two losses dropped us a spot. It stung and, honestly, it still does.

I came across a line this week that fit the weekend perfectly: “The people who truly love you don’t just celebrate your highlight reel. They love your bloopers, too.” — Sam Demma. That is what I saw on and off the field. The missed chances, misplaced passes, misdirected efforts, and tough losses revealed who these players are to one another. They did not check out. They kept encouraging, adjusting, and showing up. We still held each other responsible and accountable, because love does not ignore the mistake; it names it and helps us grow from it.

Anyone can cheer for the goal. Real love shows up after the miss and after the miscommunication. That is how loving church families live: they do not only celebrate the wins, like baptisms; they also stay close through mistakes, disappointments, and losses. That kind of love points beyond us to the God who loved us first, at our worst. He did not wait for us to get it together or perform. He loved us in our bloopers, and He still does. When we love one another this way, people catch a glimpse of Him. The scoreboard says third place. The way these players treated one another says far more. And now, we have a few in-house jokes to carry with us.

This week, who needs to know you are still for them during or after a blooper? Scripture to hold onto:

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 (KJV)

“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” John 13:35 (KJV)

“That they all may be one…” John 17:21 (KJV)

“The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places.” Habakkuk 3:19 (KJV)

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the chance to coach these players for a second year. Thank You for loving us at our worst, not only at our best. Teach us to love one another that way: to encourage after the miss, stay close through the loss, and let our love point to You. Steady our hearts when seasons do not go the way we hope. Amen.

~ from Pastor Tsholo’s heart
