5 WAYS TO GIVE YOUR HEALTH AN AUTUMN BOOST — As the leaves change colour and fall, autumn invites us to slow down, enjoy nature, and reflect on our health. Here are five simple ways to give your health an autumn boost: 1) Find a family doctor and book your yearly check-up; 2) Make healthy lifestyle changes by exercising at Burman Gym or enjoying the outdoors; 3) Enjoy seasonal foods such as apples, pears, squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, and dark leafy greens; 4) Get 7–8 hours of sleep each night and maintain a consistent sleep schedule; and 5) Take care of your mental health by staying connected with friends and family, joining a group, or volunteering. “They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest…” — Psalm 107:37 ~ Your Health Ministry Team

SHARE YOUR ANNOUNCEMENT Have something to share with our church family? We welcome announcements for our weekly bulletin, including ministry updates, community events, and special celebrations. Submit here by Wednesday at noon to be included in the upcoming Sabbath bulletin (space permitting).

Recently, I started playing golf – very much influenced by the persuasive skills of Chaplain Massiel. At first I was not good, pretty bad actually. In the game of golf, you start play by placing the ball on a tee (a pencil-sized pedestal that is pegged into the ground on which the ball is placed to elevate it above the grass) and striking it with a club towards a hole in the ground, with the intention to have that ball fall into the hole with as few strikes as possible. What I have experienced to be difficult is doing this under the pressure of your playing partners’ eyes fixed on your person, and the loud silence as they wait with baited breath for you to position yourself for a swing at the ball and actually make contact with the ball. In my first attempt, I swung at the ball several times, failing to strike it. At that moment, I was comforted by the encouraging presence of my playing partners.

It takes a generous serving of resilience, and flexibility to learn a new skillset, and to take up space in a new environment. It often requires keeping your head high, even when you wish for the earth to open and swallow you, such as when you swing at a stationary ball without hitting it for several attempts.

As I reflect on this learning experience, I realize that success is less about doing what you already have a mastery of, and more about trying what is difficult, new and foreign. And now, as we have welcomed new students, faculty & staff to our campus community, I imagine many may feel uncomfortable and out of their wits, as they take on the challenge of a new environment and new activties. Be reminded in this season of newness that God is present in the unfamiliar and unknown.

Joshua 1:9 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

~ from Pastor Carl’s heart
