But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:25
For the past school year, we at PAA have been walking through the book of Joshua. This book comes with battles, losses, trust, deceit, division of land, and so much more. At the end of the book, we find ourselves reading these verses that are posted in Christian homes and in the social media profiles of believers.
After sitting through this book in more detail, I face this interestingly beautiful and tense comfort in its words. Most of the time we hear the last part of these verses discussed, but rarely the entire verse. So let’s sit.
But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you
Undesirable? How can serving God be undesirable? How can trusting a god we do not see be undesirable? How can living a life that looks completely different than others be undesirable? How can anything related to God be undesirable?
If we are all honest, there are some aspects of this Christian walk that do feel undesirable. There are times that lust, jealousy, trusting ourselves, and unforgiveness feel so much easier than doing things the way that God wants us to. Serving God is not always the easy choice, the comfortable choice, or even the desirable choice in the moment. Sometimes the things of God ask us to die to ourselves, to forgive when we would rather hold bitterness, to trust when we would rather control, and to wait when we would rather take matters into our own hands.
Joshua’s words assume something we often don’t want to admit: there will be days when serving the Lord feels undesirable.
And yet Joshua does not say, “Wait until serving God feels desirable.” He does not say, “Follow your heart,” or “Choose God if you feel passionate enough.” He says, “Choose this day whom you will serve.”
Faithfulness has always involved choice.
There is something bold and beautiful about looking at God honestly and saying, “Right now my heart wants something else. Right now obedience feels costly and sin feels easier. But I choose You anyway.”
Perhaps one of the most sincere prayers we can pray is, “Lord, I do not desire You as much as I want to desire You. Give me a heart that longs for You.”
The beauty of the gospel is that God does not ask us to hide our misplaced desires from Him. He invites us to bring them to Him. The God who calls us to choose Him is also the God who changes hearts and reshapes affections.
So choose Him.
Choose Him on the days worship feels alive and on the days it feels routine. Choose Him when obedience is joyful and when it is costly. Choose Him when faith comes easily and when it feels like a battle.
And then join Joshua in saying with confidence, not because your feelings are always perfect but because your decision is settled:
“As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
