NOW THAT SUMMER IS HERE, we all look forward to summer holidays, enjoying the warmer weather outdoors, and being more active. While it is fun, shifting schedules can be overwhelming for those of us who thrive on routine. One wellness tool you can bring into summer is a grounding daily rhythm—a pattern of simple, repeated actions that helps your body and mind know what to expect. Here are a few grounding strategies: Anchor your mornings by starting each day with something consistent, such as a glass of warm lemon water, a walk around the block, or a few deep breaths. Morning anchors help regulate cortisol, your body’s natural “get up and go” hormone, and set a positive tone for the day. Prioritize rest—our bodies still need adequate sleep even with longer daylight hours. Dim the lights after 9:00 p.m., reduce screen time at least an hour before bed, and consider gentle stretching, evening journaling, or a cup of herbal tea before 8:00 p.m. to help your body wind down. Eat cooling, nourishing summer foods such as berries, cucumbers, melons, and fresh herbs to stay hydrated and refreshed. Enjoy walking barefoot on grass or sand, as it can help reduce stress and improve your mood—just be sure the area is safe. Finally, end each day with a calming routine: turn off the noise, stretch, pray, or light a candle (and don’t forget to blow it out! 🕯️). Jesus invites us, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28–30.! ~ Your Health Ministry Team

I was sitting working at Starbucks, finally locked in on the task at hand. Oblivious to the world around me with music in my headphones, when there was a sound that suddenly broke through, I looked up in time to see the finale of a 1-gallon Strawberry Acai Refresher spilling from the counter to the floor—one whole gallon. Had I not heard the sound, it would have been the sweet, vibrant fragrance that filled the room that would have alerted my senses.
The gallon of sticky pink liquid first tumbled quickly, then slowly spread across a wide swath of the floor. Stymied only by the fast hands and quick reaction of the employees. Rags appeared out of nowhere, wiping the counter and stopping the mess from spreading on the floor. So many rags, so much frantic motion. Then the big industrial mop came out. First, soaking up the mess; then the double-pump wringing out of the mop; then wiping the mess up. Over and over.
I was there for some time, so I got to see the mop come out three times. Each time, the water would come out piping hot, and the floor would get the same soak-it-up-and-clean-it-up process.
By the time I left, two hours later, it seemed like the mess was finally under control, but out of curiosity, I couldn’t resist walking over it. I can confirm it was, in fact, still sticky.
When I looked up and saw the employee’s face as the liquid was spilling, it was first shock, then sheepishness. And that sheepishness stayed on his face while he took the first shift on the mop. What was notably missing was any look of anger or grumpiness from his coworkers; in fact, they reacted as if it had happened before and would happen again. Not that he had made the mess before, but that somebody had and somebody would again. They just knew what to do. Some kept working on their assigned tasks, and some were able to stop and help. Even after his shift ended and he left, there was still some stickiness to deal with; somebody else came and cleaned up the mess again. I imagine someone would again until it wasn’t sticky anymore.
I am all too familiar with making messes. Sometimes preventable and sometimes not. It happens. I’ve learned to treat myself gently in those moments, and I’ve learned how important it is to treat others gently when it happens to them. Bring out the rags and get to work. This idea applies to both real physical messes and the ones we can sometimes make in our lives. We seldom can handle it all on our own; we need the help of those around us. When the messes are big, they’ll take more than one go or one approach to be dealt with properly. That’s ok. In the big messes of sin, only God can take care of that, and in the smaller messes of life, we have a community around us, sometimes not revealed until we need them. Could it be that you’re trying to handle something all on your own that the community around you could step in? Today, could you invite God and those around you to help you handle the mess?
