It was 10 AM, the ground was covered in snow and I was feeling anxious and impatient. It was the most bleak morning of the year. Fog everywhere! We had been dreaming, planning and preparing for this day for over nine months and finally everything was coming together; except the snow. In a few hours, hundreds of guests would be streaming onto our campus to experience and be immersed into this dramatic retelling of the story of Jesus, not in the comfort of a church or performance hall, but outdoors. The farmer’s almanac predicted that spring should start on March 20; it was now April 3. During the month of March, the snow had melted and cleared from the fields several times, but now in this last week it was snowing everyday- I had become apprehensive. In my heart , I felt the Spirit, reminding me that the God who set the sun, moon and stars in space, who spoke the beasts of the field and the birds of the air into existence, who called forth trees and grass from nothing, and who silenced the winds and waves on the sea of Galilee would clear the clouds and cause the sun to shine on this Hilltop for His Glory. But, I was still uneasy. I imagined- this must have been how the disciples felt when they were in the boat, bailing water and rowing against the wind as Jesus, unbothered, was napping.
In a manic fit, I disregarded faith and went to the Facility Maintenance office to get garden rakes to clear the snow from the grass at the foot of the cross- since God seemed to be sleeping, I would just do it myself. I labored over this for about an hour. It made a dent, but not much difference. My hands were now freezing, I could hear my heart pounding against the walls of my chest. And then, I looked up and… the sun? Yes, it began to peek through a cloud lined with silver. Within a few minutes, the sun melted all the snow on the ground and all my futile efforts seemed ridiculous. I remembered the words Jesus spoke to the brothers: ”Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40). How many times do we try to clear the snow on our own in our lives, even as we serve a God who holds creation in His Hands?
Faith requires trust. God has earned our trust, time and again, but yet we still doubt Him. Let’s always choose faith over fear!
Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.
