What does it truly mean to live out what I know?

In Joshua 2, we are invited to walk through the story of Rahab and the spies. It is truly an interesting story. Most of the time, we focus on how God can use anyone, no matter what their history is. However, I want us to talk about Rahab’s knowledge, fear, and her actions.

Her knowledge

Two spies have been sent to the land to check it out as Joshua prepares to invade Jericho. The king hears that people have been sent to spy out the land. Men are sent to the house of Rahab to see if they are in her home, but she deceives them and says that they went another way when they were actually in her home. Before the spies go to sleep, she speaks to them: “I know the Lord has given you this land” (Joshua 2:9). After this, she tells them that her people are afraid of them because of their God and what He has done for them. She knows about this God and what He has done. She has His résumé.

Her fear

This knowledge leads to a sense of fear of what this God is capable of doing. What do you mean there is a God who parts oceans? What do you mean there is a God who gives victory to His people? Have you ever sat and truly considered all of the great things that God has done? What a God! One who leads His people out of bondage. One who leads with and in fire. One who provides food from the sky. What a God.

Her actions

With all that Rahab knew about their God, with all of the fear that possibly built within her as a result of her knowledge, Rahab doesn’t run away; instead, she leans in. She allows all that she knows to lead to her action of protecting the spies. Her faith does not just remain in her head; it affects her actions. With all of this combined, she asked for protection for her family—not just her, but her family as well. Even in her asking for protection, she is aware that God is going to deliver Jericho into the hands of the Israelites. She knows that God will win, and she wants to be safe with those who have the victory. “Now swear to me by the Lord that you will be kind to me and my family since I have helped you. Give me some guarantee that when Jericho is conquered, you will let me live, along with my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all their families.” (Joshua 2:12–13)

This week, may your knowledge and faith move you to action. This will be a blessing for you and your family.
