5 STEPS TO MENTAL WELL-BEING 1. Connect with other people. Good relationships are important for your mental well-being. If possible, set a regular time to eat dinner together with your family. 2. Be physically active. Exercise can trigger chemical changes in your brain that help improve your mood! 3. Learn new skills. Building new abilities can boost your self-confidence and give you a stronger sense of purpose. 4. Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Proper nutrition supports both body and mind. 5. Volunteer in your community. Helping others shifts our focus outward and brings fulfillment. When we face difficulties, the best thing we can do is place our focus on the Lord, the source of health, healing, and hope: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding…” — Proverbs 3:5-6.

Recently our family experienced an unexpected emergency. My sister in law, Myla Trenchuk had gone through a couple of scary days that led to two visits to the emergency room and ultimately, an emergency hysterectomy. The details of those days I will leave for her to share. I share only one of the many moments that God’s hand was felt over a scary season. The day after her surgery, Jr and I were able to visit her. After everything she’d experienced it felt almost surreal how calm that moment was. Myla, Rob, Jr and myself caught up on everything that had happened. Rob happily munching on his favourite Subway sandwich, I was sipping my steeped tea with my feet tucked by Myla’s, and Jr doing his brotherly work of gently teasing his sister. After so much anxiety, unknowns and prayer, this felt like a miracle.
As she shared what the next steps were for her to get discharged, she mentioned that the doctor would like to give her more blood, but at the moment she was non-urgent and they had to hold off on giving her more due to shortages at the blood bank. I wondered aloud if donating blood would be something we could do, both Myla and I exclaimed together, “For Service Day!” A little watery eyed, “Good idea!” was exchanged.
I called Canadian Blood services the next day. When I connected with Jasmine the coordinator for this area she exclaimed, “It’s so crazy that you called me! I was just driving back to Calgary from Edmonton and saw the Burman University sign and wondered to myself if they would ever want to partner with us? And then you called the next day!” I breathed out, too stunned to say anything more, “Isn’t that something?”
Isn’t that something friends? It is what Pastor Honey would call a God sighting. A moment where we see that we belong to a different kingdom. Where we are given reassurance that we are not forgotten. We get to see that God is still at work in our lives. For our family, it was a needed reminder.
16 people were able to donate on September 17, wearing their purple Service Day shirts. A picture that, to me, has been happy little grapes living out the way of Jesus.
If you are interested in donating, you can go online and book an appointment at https://www.blood.ca or call 1.888.2DONATE (1.888.236.6283)
