AS YOU SIT AROUND THE TABLE THIS THANKSGIVING, practice gratitude from the heart. Did you know that you take about 8 million breaths per year, based on 15–16 breaths per minute? Your arms can hold someone you love. Your feet can take you up a mountain, or a ski hill, as we are climbing today. Take a minute to marvel at the finely tuned machinery of your body, and thank God for the steps you take every day to keep it safe and healthy. “The past is history, but today is a gift”… that is why it is called the “present.” Be thankful for the gift of time you can spend with your family and friends. Count your blessings—name them one by one. (Psalm 103:1–5) ~ Your Health Ministry Team

Every day, I sit with God in one verse and write the thoughts that come to mind.

Here is what I wrote for John 6:10: “Jesus said, ‘Have the people sit down.’ There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there).” Jesus did not answer Andrew’s question with words but with action. Andrew asked, “How far will such a meager amount of food go among so many people?” Jesus said nothing to Andrew specifically in response to his question. He told all the disciples to get the people to sit down. Sometimes I ask You a question and it seems You are not answering me. I need to assume You are answering me, and if I had more spiritual sensitivity I might see it—or I might not see it—and I still need to trust that You are good and faithful.

Jesus, on the cross You asked the question, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34). You couldn’t see God’s answer, and yet You continued to trust that God is good and faithful: “Jesus called out with a loud voice, ‘Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit’” (Luke 23:46). You trusted Yourself into the hands of the One who seemingly had forsaken You and who had not responded to Your question.

Help me have faith like that—to turn to You, to cry out to You, and regardless of whether I am aware of any response, to continue to trust my life into Your hands, knowing You, God, are good and faithful. “According to Your love remember me, for You, Lord, are good. … All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful” (Psalm 25:7b, 10a).

Lord, You were answering Andrew’s question with an object lesson. Step 1: Get everyone to sit down on the grass. Step 2 is tomorrow’s verse. John pointed out how small the barley loaves were and how small the fish were. Now he points out how large the crowd was—5,000 men—so in total, including women and children, it was probably about 10,000 to 20,000 people, making clear the validity of Andrew’s question.

“My darling Honey, I invite you to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I hear you and am answering you, even when it seems I’m not. I am with you and for you. I love you.”

I love You, Lord.

~ from Pastor Honey’s heart
