HEALTH & HAPPINESS GO HAND IN HAND Do you know that facial expressions affect your emotions? Smiling makes people feel happier, just as scowling makes them feel angrier, and frowning makes them feel sadder. Here are some ways to boost your outlook and give your mental and physical health a lift: 1. Stay connected – There is a strong link between happiness and close relationships with family and friends. Personal connection creates emotional stimulation, which is a “mood booster,” while isolation and loneliness are “mood busters”! 2. Volunteer – Volunteering provides a sense of purpose and improves your mood. 3. Perform acts of kindness. 4. Find your inner child – What gave you joy as a child? Happiness can be contagious! “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.” — Philippians 4:4 ~ Your Health Ministry Team

Recently, Burman U had the privilege of hosting the North American Division Campus Ministries retreat. What a joy it was to gather with students and chaplains from so many of our sister institutions!

Of course, hosting comes with its own share of details. A lot of them. And while the weekend was beautiful, there were still a few loose ends to tie up afterwards—one of which was returning 20 unused sleeping bags. Yes… twenty. Out of twenty-five. Why so many? Well, let’s just say I had a moment of panic that we wouldn’t have enough bedding (spoiler: we did). But that left me with a trunk full of sleeping bags that needed to go back to a store in Calgary.

My sensible plan was to sort them at home, calmly and privately. But the reality? A rushed, last-minute decision to “just do it now.” Which turned into me, by myself, sorting sleeping bags… in my car. Because I was too embarrassed to do it in front of other humans. Picture me checking tags, separating the unused from the used, stuffing the good ones into fresh garbage bags, sweat starting to form, glasses sliding down my nose. It took a solid 20 minutes. And by the end, I had four overstuffed garbage bags. Naturally, I decided to haul all four in at once. And naturally, the cashier was on the opposite end of the store. By the time I reached him—winded, frazzled, flustered—I breathed out, “Hello, I’d like to return 20 sleeping bags.” He was… not amused. And let’s just say his response did not soothe my already fragile emotions.

That was a crossroads moment. I could have gotten defensive. Or annoyed. Or let my embarrassment morph into irritation. But somehow, grace broke through. A quiet thought: It’s going to take the time it takes. Just stay calm. Ride it out. So I breathed. And waited.

Then help arrived—two young employees who came bouncing over with bright smiles. They happily sorted each sleeping bag, chatting with me, asking questions, treating me kindly. Before long, a manager joined in to finalize the details. And after much scanning, clearing, coding, and clicking, the little “refund approved” chime sounded like a hallelujah chorus. High fives. Smiles. Laughter. I walked out of that store feeling lighter than any of those sleeping bags.

Here’s the lesson that settled deep in my heart that day: Kindness changes things.

A gentle presence can defuse tension. A simple offer—“Can I give you a hand with that?”—can shift an entire moment. Leaning into awkwardness instead of avoiding it can turn strangers into helpers and burdens into blessings.

Scripture tells us, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). Sometimes that looks like deep spiritual support. And sometimes… it looks like helping someone drag four garbage bags full of sleeping bags across a store.

My prayer this week is that we notice the people who look overwhelmed, embarrassed, or weighed down—whether literally or emotionally. And when we notice, that we respond.

Do those bags look heavy? Does that person seem flustered? Could your smile or your presence make a difference?

Yes.
Do it.
Lean into the awkward. Carry someone’s load.
And in doing so, may we reflect the kindness of Christ to one another.

~ from Pastor Massiel’s heart
