WHAT IS LONELINESS? Loneliness is a distressing mental state—a sense of feeling disconnected from others. You can be surrounded by people and still feel lonely. Loneliness can feel like being rejected, or like you are invisible or misunderstood. Physically, it can feel like a heaviness or a lack of energy. Studies of brain images show we process emotional rejection the same way we process physical pain. What is the relationship between loneliness and health? Socializing is a critical part of our health, just like diet, exercise, and sleep. Connection and supportive relationships help us handle life’s stressful challenges, make healthy choices about exercise, food, and sleep, and manage difficult emotions such as stress, anxiety, and depression. You will feel less lonely by sharing with someone. Say “hi” to the checkout clerk, people you pass on the sidewalk, a teacher, coach, your pastor, or a spiritual leader. Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” ~ Your Health Ministry Team

GLOBAL YOUTH DAY Join us on Sabbath, March 21, 2026 for Global Youth Day (GYD), a worldwide youth service and outreach initiative coordinated by the General Conference Youth Ministries Department. GYD invites young people to be the hands and feet of Jesus by living out His gospel through acts of kindness, prayer, and community service. This year’s theme, “Communion in Action,” is inspired by Acts 4:31 and calls us to unite in faith and action—boldly sharing God’s love in our communities just as the early church did. Let’s support and pray for our young people as they share God’s love in practical ways!

My husband’s first pastoral assignment was working as a camp counselor at a summer camp in Clear Lake, Manitoba. Being new to the area, we had no house to move into. So I had no choice but to go camping in an old tent trailer with three little boys—ages 5, 2½, and a 9-month-old baby. I had never been camping before, and now I was camping alone with my three little ones.
When we arrived at the campground, they mentioned that a mama black bear and her two cubs had been spotted nearby, and park rangers were actively trying to track them down and move them away from the campground.
It was pitch dark, and my husband was camping far from me in a tent with eight young campers. There were no cell phones back then either. No way to call him, no way to ask him to be with me or help me. I was all alone with my three little boys.
I was terrified. I was scared. I couldn’t sleep. A sense of fear came over me; anxiety filled my mind, and I couldn’t think properly. I was panic-stricken. I wasn’t only worried for myself but also about my three babies.
Suddenly, the unexpected happened: my two-year-old son rolled right out of the tent trailer onto the ground. Some of you may remember that the old tent canvas was made like a fitted sheet. I jumped up, terrified, opened the door, picked up my son, and laid him on the bed.
After this incident, my heart was racing, so I sat outside on the steps of the tent trailer with my head down, taking deep breaths. Praying. The fear was keeping me prisoner.
I don’t know how to explain it, but it was as if God was saying, “Nicole, look up. Look up.” As I looked up at the sky, there was a glow right above our campground. Nowhere else—and the stars were brightly shining outside the glow. I was in awe as I looked at the sky. My fear left me as I looked at this glow above me. I wasn’t scared anymore because I knew then that God was protecting us. At that point, the Bible verse that came to mind was Psalm 34:7 (NIV): “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear (love) Him, and He delivers them.”
You may be experiencing some form of fear or anxiety in your life right now, but know that God cares for you. God loves you. As Matthew Henry said: “Wherever we encamp under the banner of Christ, the angels of God will encamp round about us, and pitch their tents where we pitch ours.”
~ from Pastor Nicole’s heart
