AAAC ANNUAL MEETING & MUSIC CONCERT The Association of African Adventists in Canada (AAAC) warmly invites everyone to its Annual Meeting on Sabbath, August 22, beginning at 10:00 AM at Burman University. This special day of worship will feature an inspiring message by Ps. Henry Tembo on “The Transforming Power of Christ” (John 1:4). The celebration will continue with a Music Concert at 3:00 PM, and everyone is welcome to attend.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF KATHE ZACHARY It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Kathe Zachary, who passed away on June 19 in Dauphin, Manitoba. A funeral service will be held on August 16 at the Dauphin SDA Church. Kathe was one of the original dedicated teachers at the Samson Band Private School, operated by the church, and was deeply involved in the life and ministry of the church community.

I’m sure you’ve come across a box of fundraising chocolate almonds before, the small white box with a price label wrapped around it, usually $2 to $5. In elementary school, that box was my greatest temptation. I loved chocolate, and when I saw the full carton sitting in our house, all I could think was this is all mine. My parents were clear: the chocolate wasn’t for eating, it was for selling. The goal was to raise enough for our Grade 4 Christmas party, we had big dreams of pizza, chips, and juice.
Over the next few weeks, my parents noticed I was going through the supply quickly, but they didn’t ask any questions until the day came to turn in the money and any leftover boxes. There was no money. There were no boxes. You already know how this ends, I had eaten every single one, over the span of three weeks.
My dad took me to school the next day, and I had to explain everything to my teacher. I remember feeling so embarrassed, crying as I confessed. She told me plainly that it was my responsibility to pay for what I’d eaten. The next couple of days, all I could think about was where that money would come from, do I sell something?; get a job?.. Nine-year-olds don’t have a lot of valuables, or work experience. It was a heavy weight, I had come face to face with the consequences of my own choice.
At the end of the week on Friday evening, my dad tucked me into bed and said, “We paid your chocolate bill.” I cried. I knew I didn’t deserve it. I had known exactly what I was doing the whole time I sat there eating candy that wasn’t mine. Isn’t it strange how we can know something is wrong and still get tangled up in it anyway? There are moments we give in to temptation and then sit in the wreckage of what we’ve done, wondering how we’ll ever make it right.
Romans 3:23 reminds us: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Not one of us is exempt. Like a nine-year-old staring down a candy bill she can’t pay, we come face to face with a debt we cannot cover on our own. That’s what makes God’s love so awesome. He saw the debt, and He paid it, in full, in love, before we even asked. Today, as we remember God’s sacrifice, His love, and His power, may we remember: the bill has been paid. Not because we deserved it, but because He loved us enough to cover it anyway.
