REMEMBRANCE DAY As we celebrate Remembrance Day, it is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served in wars and conflicts, as well as the collective impact of these events on our communities and individuals. We have the free will to choose how we live our lives—what we speak, what we think, what we do, and how we act. We are each responsible for how those freedoms are expressed through our actions, choices, and health. In fact, 80% of our health status is the result of our own choices. Remembering shapes our identities. Remembrance Day serves as a powerful reminder to strive for a peaceful world. “But they that wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles…” — Isaiah 40:31 ~ Your Health Ministry Team

SHARE YOUR ANNOUNCEMENT Have something to share with our church family? We welcome announcements for our weekly bulletin, including ministry updates, community events, and special celebrations. Submit here by Wednesday at noon to be included in the upcoming Sabbath bulletin (space permitting).

When I started working at PAA, I was so unsure of how I would connect with students. I didn’t go to an Adventist Elementary school or High school. I wasn’t fully aware of what the environment would be like, so I felt like I was coming in blind. Are we always praying? Are we always talking about God? Is the academic standard the same? Is everyone SDA? Is everyone already baptized? I just had so many unknowns. How would the students feel about me being a pastor and a math teacher? Would they connect with me differently? Would I always have to be extra gracious in terms of deadlines because I preach about grace and the way that Jesus extended His hand?? SOOOOOO many questions.

Then I started. Day one turned into week one, which turned into month one. I was so concerned about whether my students would like me, sometimes more than if I was a good educator. I wanted to build bridges while also empowering students to take their relationships with God seriously, while also striving for academic excellence.

There is one particular student who sat near the front of class, and she was so hard to read. She would smile… sometimes, but most of the time she just looked disgusted or confused. I truly did not think she liked me. It felt like I wasn’t explaining something correctly, or she wasn’t connecting well with the messages in the chapel.

Then one day, she came to ask me for some extra help with math. At one point, she was laughing with me. As in, I said something and she thought it was funny. It felt like this bridge had been destroyed. Then… she said that I was like one of her favourite teachers, and I was baffled. I was sooooo confused, and I told her. I said, “You know, I thought you hated me?” She responded with shock, too, wondering how I could possibly think that. This entire interaction taught me so much.

You can never judge a book by its cover. You can think one thing, and the complete opposite can be true. You can think that something is going horribly, but it is actually going very well. May this story be an encouragement to just have conversations with people, try not to assume, build bridges, and engage in conversations.

This student will be one that I remember forever. She has been a blessing with her hard work, dedication, and honesty. To this student, thank you.
~ from Pastor Dennalia’s heart
